When something goes wrong

Does converting WebP to PNG improve the quality? expand_more
It prevents further quality loss rather than adding detail back. Most WebP files are already compressed with some loss, so the PNG preserves exactly what the WebP held — it cannot recover detail the WebP had already discarded.
Will my transparent background survive? expand_more
Yes. Both WebP and PNG support an alpha channel, and transparent areas are carried across unchanged. This is the main reason to choose PNG over JPG here: JPG has no transparency at all and fills those regions with white.
Why is the PNG so much larger than my WebP? expand_more
PNG stores pixels losslessly, while most WebP files are lossy. A PNG of the same image is routinely several times larger. If file size matters more than transparency, converting to JPG gives a much smaller result.
