Convert WebP images and clips into GIF
Animated WebP looks sharper than GIF but will not play in Slack, Discord, email or most CMS previews. GIF plays everywhere — including the places that refuse WebP.
This keeps the animation. If you only need a still image that opens anywhere, use WebP to JPG; to make an animated GIF from a video instead, use Video to GIF.
How it works
Choose your WebP file
The image or clip is read from your device and never leaves it.
Set the width
GIF files grow very quickly with resolution, so 480 px is a good default for sharing.
Set the frame rate
Lower frame rates produce a much smaller file. 12 fps is smooth for most clips.
The picture never leaves your device
Compressing or converting a photo usually means sending it to somebody else's computer and getting a new one back. Here the work happens in the page you are already looking at: your browser opens the file, the tool rewrites it, and the browser hands you the result.
- Opened from your disk by your browser — not sent anywhere first.
- Held in the tab while the tool works, then dropped.
- Saved to your device by your browser, not by a link to a server.
- Closing the tab clears the working copy completely.
- No account, so nothing is ever attached to an identity.
- No tracking of what you worked on or what was inside the file.
There is no queue and no waiting room. The picture is worked on in front of you and released the moment the tab closes. You can read more about how the conversion runs on your own device, or check our guide to verifying it in DevTools.
What people use it for
Shipping a lighter page
Hero images are usually the heaviest thing on a site. Getting them smaller before they reach your CMS is the fastest performance win available.
Sending photos on a weak signal
On hotel Wi-Fi or a poor mobile connection a full-resolution photo can sit at sending for minutes. A smaller copy goes through in seconds.
Preparing marketplace listings
Selling platforms set their own caps on size and dimensions. Get inside them before you start filling in the form.

When something goes wrong
Damaged files, and formats outside the list above, stop with a plain message rather than a spinner that never finishes. If a picture opens in your gallery it will normally open here.
The format is not supported. Convert it to PNG or JPG first, or try one of the other image tools.
Why not an upload site
An upload-based tool is a form that posts your picture to someone else's machine. Take that step out and a lot of small annoyances disappear with it.

Questions
Will my animated WebP still animate?
Yes. The whole animation is decoded and re-encoded frame by frame, so timing and motion are preserved. A static WebP simply produces a single-frame GIF.
Why is the GIF so much larger than the WebP?
GIF is a much older format. It stores every frame as an indexed 256-colour bitmap, while WebP uses modern compression. Expect a considerably larger file, especially at high resolution and frame rate.
What does dithering do?
GIF can only hold 256 colours, so gradients and photographs can look banded. Dithering blends neighbouring pixels to hide those bands. Sierra looks best; Bayer produces a smaller file; turning it off gives flat colour blocks.
How do I make the file smaller?
Reduce the width first — file size scales with the number of pixels. Lowering the frame rate is the next biggest win, and choosing Bayer dithering helps a little.
Is there a file size limit?
No fixed limit is imposed by the tool. The practical ceiling is how much memory your device has free, because the whole job runs inside this browser tab.
Does it work without an internet connection?
Yes, once the page has loaded. Nothing is fetched while you work, so a dropped connection does not interrupt a run.
